High Tech Tomatoes
Houweling’s
Houweling’s Nursery cogeneration plant was our first tomato greenhouse, a cogeneration application that we are very excited to introduce to United States growers. Control Technology designed permitted and integrated this project which utilizes two Jenbacher natural gas powered engines. The engines provide heat, Co2, electricity, hot water and also power 7.7 MW of greenhouse lighting. The CO2 is used by the greenhouse plants during photosynthesis along with the water that is created as a result of engine condensation. We designed a proprietary control system for the dispatch of this plant which communicates directly with California State ISO in real time. This project is a great example of our regulatory resourcefulness as we successfully permitted the project and also secured 26 Million dollars worth of contracts, a 1.4 Million dollar grant and a rebate from the State of California SGIP for $800,000 which provided Houweling’s significant savings on the project.
